It’s More Than a Race

The Pinewood Derby is one of the classic Cub Scout traditions...

A joyful mix of creativity, engineering, teamwork, and friendly competition.

Scouts don’t just watch cars race...

They design, build, customize, and race their own miniature cars with help from family and leaders.

How It Works

The Journey from Block to Track

1. Start with a Kit
Every Scout gets an official Pinewood Derby kit. It includes a block of wood, four wheels, and axles. That’s it!

2. Design & Build

Scouts sketch out ideas and bring them to life. They sand, shape, paint, and decorate their car so it reflects personality, creativity, and style. Adults are there to guide and help, but the goal is for the Scout to take the lead.

3. Learn & Improve
Along the way Scouts learn simple engineering and physics concepts like gravity, friction, and weight distribution...all in a supportive, fun environment!

4. Inspect Before You Race
Every car is checked to make sure it meets the pack’s rules (size, weight, wheels, etc.). This keeps the competition fair and fun.

5. Race Day!
Cars race down a sloped track using only gravity...no motors or batteries. Each run is fast and exciting, and every Scout gets a moment in the spotlight.
